Job application tips to join the Postmates delivery Fleet
Jump to section

Postmates is a delivery service with a fleet of workers who pick up merchandise like food and products and deliver the goods quickly to customers. Here’s how to join the Postmates fleet quickly and successfully.

Job requirements for Postmates Fleet delivery

Postmates requires employees to meet a set of standard requirements for delivery work.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Have access to an insured vehicle, or a bicycle. You can deliver with a car, truck, van, bicycle, motorcycle, or scooter. In some metro areas like New York City and San Francisco, you can even deliver on foot.

  • If using a motor vehicle, it must be covered by valid insurance, registered under your name, and in good working order. If you’re delivering on a motorcycle or scooter, it’s important to make sure there is a secure way to keep food deliveries safe en route to your Postmates customer.

  • Must have a Social Security number.

  • Live in (or near) a city that Postmates operates in. Click here for a list of the cities and areas Postmates currently operates in.

    • Note: There is no minimum or maximum distance from how far you live to each operating market, but you will only be paid for the mileage and time covered for your completed trips.
  • Have a profile photo and be able to upload the image upon request. This must be a clear headshot and is used to verify your identity before you can create a profile and begin the Postmates application process.

    • Note: It is not necessary to have a formal or professional headshot; any clear, straight-forward picture will work. Try to ask a friend or family member if they can help, but a selfie will do in a pinch!
  • Be able to pass a comprehensive background check.

Helpful tips for your Postmates application

In addition to the above requirements, you must also have the following:

  • Access to a smartphone—either an iPhone or Android that can support the Postmates Fleet app. The phone must have an Android 5.0, iOS 11, or a newer operating system. This is essential as it is used to accept and fulfill all delivery requests.

    • To check if your phones operating system:
Android: Phone Settings → About Phone → About Device Operating System will be listed under “Android Version”
iPhone: Settings → General → About
  • Once you know that your phone is compatible, download the Postmates Fleet app. Doing this ahead of time ensures that you are prepared to start accepting incoming deliveries as soon as you are approved and have completed the application process.

  • As a courier, you’ll use the Postmates Fleet app exclusively, and not the regular Postmates app (which customers use to submit orders)

  • You must have a valid checking account—this is where all your weekly payments will be sent to you via direct deposit. You will be asked to provide both your checking and routing number to your account during the verification process. Your Postmates pay cannot be sent to a savings or PayPal account.

Navigating the Postmates Fleet app for employees

    • Postmates couriers are given prepaid cards to be used for payment upon pick-up.This card will be sent to you via mail as part of your welcome kit, which also includes a Postmates bag.
    • Note: in some cities, a Postmates card is not required, and if so your Welcome Kit will be sent to you after you make your first delivery.
  • Once your card is activated and you’re fully approved, you’ll be able to receive delivery requests and start your first Postmates gig.

Frequently asked questions during the application process

If I’m driving to deliver orders, will my car need to pass an inspection?

No. Because you are not carrying any passengers, your card does not need to pass an inspection and simply needs to be in good working condition.

Do I still need to have a driver’s license if I plan to deliver on foot or bike?

No, you do not need a driver’s license to be approved for bike or walking delivery. However, Postmates will ask for either a driver’s license, state ID, or passport to verify your identity during the application process.

Do I need to complete any training sessions to become a Postmates driver?

No. There are no training sessions required for new Postmates. The app will tell you the exact pick-up and drop-off locations for all accepted requests and deliveries.

Is it hard to apply and how long does it take to get hired?

No. Many current and former employees speak highly of the ease and speed of the Postmates application and hiring process, which averages from 3 to 10 days.
