How can you recognize a nurse?

Now more than ever nurses and other #healthcare workers are so valued and appreciated. They put their lives at risk every single day to help take care of those who are ill. They face exposure to the #Coronavirus sometimes only being given one mask to wear for an entire week. They are heroes, as are many who are on the front lines. But since May 6 - 12 is National Nurses Week, let’s talk about how YOU can recognize a nurse!
Ideas for Recognizing a Nurse
Nominate them for the DAISY Award
The DAISY award program celebrates and recognizes nurses that provide compassionate care to patients and families. Recipients are nominated by coworkers, physicians, patients and families. Click here to start the nomination process.
New scrubs
One way you can recognize a #nurse in your life is by purchasing them a new pair of scrubs! Not sure what size they want? No worries, a gift card will do just fine! They can order themselves a pair online to help them feel fresh and reenergized!
Send lunch/coffee to their facility
Know their favorite take-out spot? Surprise them with a delicious lunch or latte on you! I’m sure they’ll appreciate a break from the cafeteria food and vending machines and most restaurants are offering delivery.
Send a homemade card
Even if crafting isn’t your expertise, making a card or two or ten is a great way to show your gratitude and encouragement to those on the frontlines! Bonus points if you get the kids involved :)
Send a gift card
Purchase them a gift card to their favorite spot to support local businesses or consider an Amazon gift card which you can email them instantly. They could use this to buy items that they need during this difficult time.
Write a post here on Jobcase
There are many nurses here on Jobcase who would see and appreciate your gratitude. Give them a shout out!
How Others are Recognizing Nurses
The “Nightly Clap” (New York City)
Every night at 7 PM, New Yorkers are clapping out their open windows to thank nurses and other health care workers. People are also standing outside hospitals and driving by with signs that say “thank you!” Click here for the video!
Airbnb Free Housing Initiative (Global)
Airbnb announced a global initiative to help connect nurses and other COVID-19 first responders with safe and convenient places to stay while they carry out their critical work. The company’s goal is to help house 100,000 healthcare professionals, relief workers, and first responders around the world. Airbnb will waive ALL fees for stays arranged through this initiative.
Pizza VS Pandemic (Across the country)
This fantastic (and delicious!) initiative provides healthcare professionals with pizza from local facilities in their area. The organization contacts healthcare facilities directly to coordinate their order and the best safety protocols possible. All fees are covered by donations made by individuals through their website.

Nurses are way and beyond the call of most people.I am lucky to have some in my family. One is a retired Marine so I will be making sure they realize I hold them in my highest esteem. They are doing GOD'S work, and I thank them all, Ford

Thanks Elyssa - love the suggestions. I have several nurses in my family - and will be sure to give them props this week!!
I find irony that on a post titled How Do You Recognize a Nurse you have a photo of two white men and a white woman as the header. That is most DEFINITELY not a representation of the field of nursing. Women outnumber men more than 9 to 1. 9.9% of RNs are black or African American (non-Hispanic); 8.3% are Asian; 4.8% are Hispanic or Latino; 1.3% categorize themselves as two or more race; 0.4% are American Indian or Alaskan Native. These are from US Department of Labor statistics. We’re an aging group as well, with nearly 45% over age 50. You’re supposed to be JOBS experts. Don’t just pay lip service like everyone else is. It’s easy and free to say nurses are heroes. Get it right. I love your ideas, btw. I can use a set of scrubs medium bottom, large top and shoes size 7-1/2. Thanks!!
