It’s important to continue creating moments of joy in our life, despite the craziness that’s going on around us! Generally, people are spending more time at home than before, whether it be due to working from home, job searching or following social distancing guidelines. How can we boost happiness when we feel “stuck” at home all the time? Here are six actions we can all take to manifest happy thoughts and positive mindsets!

Stay connected with others

Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of social interactions! Thanks to technology, we can stay connected to friends and family, regardless of location. Having regular check-ins can reduce feelings of isolation and minimize feelings of anxiety and worry.

Get creative; maybe you can set up a virtual game night or video call a friend for a cute dinner date!

Make a schedule and stick to it

Having some sort of daily routine creates a sense of control and keeps your mood positive. Though it can be tempting to hit the snooze button a few extra times, getting up at a consistent time every day can be beneficial to your internal clock.[1] Once you wake up, try and block your day out so that you can ensure you are getting everything done that you need to. This helps with productivity and a sense of accomplishment.

Find the right background noise

If you’re like me, you know that the right playlist can instantly boost your mood! Listening to music that matches the energy you are trying to achieve can be a game-changer. Other times, putting the television on in the background can help you feel more at ease. Some people enjoy the comfort level it provides, while others find it helps them focus while doing things such as chores, working, or job seeking. Start journaling

Use journaling as a creative outlet and tool to keep track of the little things that make you happy each day. Feel free to start small! Simply jot down one or two joyous memories you had from the day. Reflection is a great way to manifest happiness, by pausing to reflect on a positive event, you can find gratitude in a lot of things.

Keep your space tidy

Believe it or not, having a clean home can have physical and mental benefits! Organizational sensation Marie Kondo says,

“The less clutter there is in your home, the easier it is to do basic cleaning chores, which let’s be honest, spark joy in almost nobody!”

A good cleaning can help you feel less stressed and overwhelmed. Keeping up with household chores also leaves you with more time to do stuff that you love! Spend a few minutes each day tidying up; it makes it so much easier to keep up with it all! I mean, who enjoys living in a chaotic space? [2]

Utilize your favorite scents

Studies [3] have shown that certain smells can have positive psychological effects. You can effectively use candles, essential oils or incense to evoke good feelings in your house! Here are some scents and the impact they can have:

  • Lavender: Sleep and calming
  • Lemon and lemongrass: Boost energy and cheerfulness
  • Peppermint: Invigorating and refreshes your space
  • Cinnamon: Warming and tranquility
  • Apple: Reduce anxiety
  • Pine: Eliminate fatigue and promote positivity
  • Floral: Positive emotions and easing melancholy

@Elyssa Duncan , I love the advice around journaling, channeling marie Kondo in the home, and using aromatherapy. these things might sound crazy but I think they make a huge difference in being able to be present and find more joy in everyday moments.

Great advice Elyssa, you have smarts that we all can use to make our days and nights better. Some people are turning to drugs as an alternative but your brain and body need no artificial stimulants. Glad you and others can write in a journal. I lose interest in my own life fast. Not my thing I guess. I need to get better at sleeping and waking at the proper time but I will do it. Much needed words of help, Thank you, Ford
