As more and more companies are transitioning to remote positions, employees and managers are learning all the skills and tools required to successfully #workfromhome. Companies that are hiring right now are looking for rockstars who can show that they have what it takes to thrive in a remote position right away.

Here are the top 3 skills you’ll need to land that work from home position you’ve been eyeing, AND how to showcase them to an employer!

Effective communication

With any work from home position, you will need to remain in contact with coworkers and managers without the convenience of being in the same building. You must be able to effectively communicate your thoughts, concerns, and ideas the same way you would in person. Tools such as email, online chat, video conferencing and phone calls will be crucial for you to stay connected.

How to illustrate this skill

Begin with your first contact with a potential employer! Craft a resume and cover letter that clearly demonstrates who you are and what you can bring to the organization. You’ll also want to be direct and concise in your interview questions and follow up communications! Show the hiring manager that you can adequately interact with others no matter where you are.

Organization

Staying organized will be the key to your success in a remote position. You won’t have a manager looking over your shoulder to keep you on your toes, so you will need to be more disciplined in your scheduling and time management skills. A future employer will want to know that you can continue to work on projects and maintain deadlines while juggling multiple responsibilities.

How to illustrate this skill

During an interview, be sure to emphasize how, in the past, you were able to manage various aspects of your job successfully. Talk about how you kept things coordinated and highlight tools you’ve used to help you do so. Provide how you used each specific tool to demonstrate to the potential employer that you can rise to the occasion. Let them know that you are a fast learner and are more than confident to learn and incorporate the tools they already use there. Such tools could include Slack, Trello, Asana, Jira, Google Docs, Dropbox, etc.

Proactiveness

When you are remote, much of your work will be done on your own, and you can’t always turn to a coworker if you need assistance quickly. Employers will be motivated to hire individuals who are independent and self-sufficient. This means that they won’t have to worry about checking in on you 24/7 and know that you can complete the task at hand on your own. If you want to thrive as a WFH employee, you must learn how to be proactive in your assignments and take on new challenges with little direction or prompting.

How to illustrate this skill

In your resume and interview, talk about the projects you have successfully taken on in past roles. Show that you are an independent self-starter who can problem solve in a pinch and that you aren’t afraid to face challenges head-on!

Which skills would YOU highlight to a potential employer when trying to land a WFH job?
