Restaurant workers make their vital earn money from tips. The restaurant pays hourly lower than minimum wage, and as restaurant workers, we know that gratuity is guaranteed money for us.
It is hard to deny that waiting for six people and more parties required a lot of work while occupying a big part of your section. When you are a server, it is good to know relief us that your hard work gets paid.
Other issues with automatic gratuity are double tipping. I worked in a couple of restaurants where you must let customers know that gratuity had already been added to the check. Restaurants may receive a call from customers about double tipping.
I was waiting for a table with ten people business group. I circled the automatic gratuity in the check, but I didn’t have a chance to let them know verbally. As a result, I got double tipped from that table. A couple of people from the group were still sitting at the bar. I approached them and explained the situation. I told them if they want, they scratch the tips because I had already got my money from automatic gratuity. A guy told me that keep the tip, but I bought them a premium drink for which I kept the %60 tip.
Nowadays, I work in a restaurant where we don’t allow to add a gratuity for a party of 6 people. I rarely see people not tip their server, but this is the restaurant policy.

As a career server in the hospitality industry, I feel obligated to answer on this one. A party of six and sometimes 8 or more usually have a standard 18% gratuity added to their check. This is everywhere you go from coast to coast. This gratuity is for the server or servers that took care of the table. This practice came to be as a way of making certain that the servers would be taken care of in the end. There is a ton of work that goes into a party of six or more and a big table can make you or break you ! Many times I have opted to leave the added gratuity off the check believing I would receive at least 20 % or more. I'm rarely wrong on this one. I feel adding a gratuity to a table of " proper " individuals is an insult. I'm not in the business of insulting my guests. But that's just me. The added gratuity is most certainly appropriate, but there is plenty of wiggle room here to make sure everyone is happy. If a server has another server working the table together, they will agree as a team. If a server is unsure of what to do him/herself, simply approach the table and ask what they would prefer or get the head of the table at sidebar and ask. Easy peezy. And if you're dining out and don't want it added on, tell your server to leave it off cause you wanna leave more. If you tell your server you don't want to pay the gratuity for your party that just took up his/her entire section and ran his/her ass off for two hours I hope he kicks your punk ass in your pussy.
Here's a thought... If the worker is WORTH employing maybe the employer should PAY them. But since they can't watch everything they do (and reward them appropriately), they expect the CUSTOMER to do it. Actually, not a bad idea, since the worker is expected to meet the customers needs, and who know better whether they did or not? My standard is this: 10% of the bill for a "meh" server (they did their job and no more). 15% for a cheerful server who did their job. 20% for a server who was actually ATTENTIVE, checked back to see if anything was missing, needed, etc. And MORE if they really excelled! NO EXCUSES for those who don't tip at all! All the time I worked as a server, I made GREAT money because I understood that I didn't get something for carrying a tray over and unloading it... I was the face of the entire staff in the kitchen, and the customer was my employer!
Most servers don't make minimum wage because servers live on tips and do claim on income tax when it's time to file taxes. So rarely tipping is not cool! They are providing you a service and do count on that money to live on.
I think Automatic Gratuity can be SOOO helpful when dealing with a large party! I don't find I've ever had a problem with double tipping, but I can see how it would be possible and cause the Customers to be furious and complain. I think Automatic Gratuity is necessary because a large Group can take up so much of your shift, and take you away from the ability to serve other tables that may have tipped more. 💸🖤
But what if a group of people come in together and when it's time to pay the bill they ask for separate checks
You're so right, not just physically draining but mentally, having to remember details.
Here in Colorado at the restaurant I work at, it's automatically added for a party of 6 or more. We also don't take reservations for a party less than 6 people. I think it's a good idea and welcome it that way, takes all the frustration that can possibly come with trying to figure out who pays what and figuring out tip as well. Have to remember that normally the server also gives a portion to the kitchen and the bar, at least that's how our servers work it.
I think automatic is best for a party of 6 or more. We had a party of 22 and each of us tipped on top of the automatic gratuity. There were 2 of them so felt it was fair to tip more...
They should looked at check being business people u did right thing
