Why is my background check taking so long?

It’s been over three weeks since I applied, interviewed, passed the drug screen, and signed the background check release document. Every time I call the employer to get a status update they claim the background check results haven’t been received. I don’t have any felonies or outstanding warrants. Maybe they just don’t want to offer me the job!

Hi- I just left a background screening company and it isn't the company that is the hold up!! It's usually your past employment references or school references and sometimes the counties you lived in that take their time. I know that places like say, Montana or Maine are court only searches, meaning you can't just go onto the state site to do the check you have to wait for an actual court employee to research and send back results to the screening company. I have also seen my co worker chasing down a education info from a school district that was not in a hurry to give results. Please remember many people are involved and if one person isn't doing their job the results can get held up! Hope this helps!!!

If it is an FBI background check, then it sometimes takes three weeks. For a local check, they should have had it long ago. The fact that the company hasn't responded to you isn't a good sign, though. It demonstrates poor human resources and communication and may be a sign of things to come.

Now days you get the screens done by outside companies, unfortunately due to the amount of applicants and the amount of cases of theft identification, they take quite a long time. But nevertheless they should of inform you about who is the company handling the background check, they are the ones that should be contacting you if any problems. Call your company and ask them the company in charge of the background check and your case number. Call them directly and inquire. It shouldn't take that long. And as well check the credentials of the company you are applying for, the revenues. There are people that are misrepresenting themselves on line as representatives of companies just to get individuals information. Is not a joke. Getting a face to face interview now days and actually getting to see your work surroundings prior getting a job is becoming difficult. If you feel something is not right trust your intuition, may be something needs to be addressed right away. Happy New Year and I hope everything clears up without any problems and you can start the year with a great job!

Hmmmm over in the UK we have a similar problem it's due to the backlog of checks over here it can take up to a month before the company receives that result I would chase that up independently just in case unless that is not how you do it over there in the States

It could be too that they're holding the position for somebody else but it is respectful enough in part of a business and part of being that they are supposed to at least tell you something in an email or call something so they're not hitting you back you constantly call them until I get the point that you're not going to give up and today give you that job or at least some information about what's going on

Is been over a week. They using my name change as an excuse but I gave them my former name along with my new name, my driver's liscense, my social security card, my birth certificate, my marriage certificate... everything they might need they got... I even used to work for that company with my former name. I was and still are rehireable, I got the offer letter, just waiting for a background to take the training again...
