I received a call from the hiring manager congratulating me on getting hired and welcoming me to the team. I was a bit shocked because I had interviewed for this job back in early Jan but never heard anything back. She got into talking about the start date, orientation, and training then said she was excited to finally have another University of Florida alum on the team. The problem is I never went to the University of Florida , I went to FSU. She was silent for awhile then asked me for my last name which I told her then things got real awkward. She put me on hold for about 15 minutes then came back on apologizing for the confusion because the job had been offered to another Arleen, not me (I’m actually Arlen). HR, had given her the wrong applicant information. I asked if she had seen my application information and she responded with “someone in human resources will be contacting you”. I hung up with some expectation of hearing back from them out of sympathy or compassion for the confusion but I couldn’t help feeling extremely disappointment after having my hopes built up and then shattered in an instance. Is there anything I can do to turn their mistake into an job opportunity at this point?
