We get a lot of questions from the job seekers about what shows up in a criminal background check. Here's a helpful background check basics article.
Criminal background checks include:
- felony and misdemeanor criminal convictions
- any pending criminal cases.
- Criminal convictions will show up on a background check regardless of how long ago the conviction was.
What’s in a criminal record depends on the state where you live; convictions are always listed, and arrests without convictions may show up for up to 7 years.
If you're concerned about what shows up in your background checks, you can try the following:
- Run a background check on yourself. If there's any dated or incorrect information, you can contact the database and see if you can get the information corrected.
- Research the state that you're in and see if you can expunge your records
- Be honest during your interview with the employer
- Look for jobs that don't require a background check

When they do a background check on me even if I was convicted of a crime over 20yrs. ago no matter if you changed your life its very unfair because they judge me in who I was 20yrs. Ago not who I am today
