Automation should be used to transform how work gets done.. I have been involved in what I would consider Technical mechanical break throughs which I created from my own knowledge of system installation which were then transformed into working equipment. These are not necessarily automated equipment but they have the ability to be operated limiting the personal to hazards and speeding up installations. Certainly they revolutionized the deep-water oil and gas community. I have done this through out my career mostly not getting any monetary value from it personally. The companies I explained how things should work and often times given great detail on HOW TO did make major profits. Example is the Malikai Guide winch system which was provided by Dril-Quip I am the one who gave them the concept and vision for this one of kind Cadillac of a system as well as their Tensioner Package I had them implement many new designs ..
So my question is for a person like me that is extremely intelligent as to how things work and how to make them work. Where does that apply ? I have done this for GE Oil and Gas Shell Exxon Chevron BP and Respsol giving my knowledge of field service to create and make better systems for al

When the carriage makers went out of business when cars were invented along with horse breeders to supply the horses, the world did not end. The actual problem is not automation, it is AI which will replace a whole lot of workers in the near future and that will transform society.
