“You're standing on the surface of the earth. You walk one mile south, one mile west, and one mile north. You end up exactly where you started. Where are you?”

Standing in the same place on the surface of the Earth. ( No one said you didn't also walk 1 mile east.) Alternatively you could have been walking on a treadmill in each of the 3 directions never having left your current location.

If you are walking that exact tract you end up one mile exactly west of your starting GPS position.
