Valid driver license needed?!

Why is it that most of the jobs want you to have a valid driver's license but alot of them you won't be driving their company cars??? Is this NOT discrimination? Don't we have enough that eliminates us from certain job positions like education level and back ground checks? Whether or not someone has a valid driver's license isn't important for all jobs. Give me a BREAK....

I have a driver's license and a C.D.L. both i.d's are valid... Your i.d. is suppose to individualisé who you are.. But, with so much Identity theft, and computer scams nowadays an individual has to have a Uniqueness

One small reason is so that if you need to get to your job you can drive yourself there, plus Drivers license can be used as a form of ID for the hiring process just like a passport, birth certificate, and or Social Security Card, and if they need you to fill in for something that needs a drivers license or you want to transfer to that kind of position it helps to know that ahead of time.

Keisha, not all jobs require a driver’s license, particularly those that pay very low wages. But having one is a very common requirement for the sorts of job that can actually lift people out of poverty—

those in:

  • construction,
  • manufacturing,
  • security, and unions jobs including electricians and plumbers

Not having a driver’s license and access to reliable transportation is a big issue. Sometimes, licenses are required because employers know the jobs will be at sites across a region and need employees to be able to get there reliably and on time. Other times, licenses are required because employees may need to move cars—a listing for an auto detailer requires a license, for example—or move trucks, at construction sites.

The drivers license requirement is a joke.. it's a privilege right? So presumably employment is a privilege? I'm disgusted with the judgement passed , and might as well call it discrimination..

While a big business would be able to afford to take that highly ethical stance, small businesses can't afford to take any fly-by-nighter on who might not work out. The revenue earned by their businesses is significantly lower, but their payroll tax per each employee is the same.

Discrimination against what? It's a form of official identification and is often used for verifying right to work and completing I-9 forms. A State ID is an acceptable alternative. It is verified by your State just like a DL but it is just an ID card. In today's society ID is not optional and requiring one is not discrimination because every citizen can get one, You just have to provide the proper documents. I had to supply a long list of documents including Birth Certificate just to register my car. Of course I could have refused or screamed discrimination but I'd be walking. It is what it is and everyone has a choice to comply. If you don't want to the consequence is you don't get the job. An employer has every right to set requirements to work there as long as they're reasonable and not discriminatory. Since a DL or State ID is available to everyone it is not discrimination to require it.

To be honest I would not hire someone without a license. Even though having one will not guarantee they show up on time, not having one means you have to depend on someone else to get the employee to work. As a small business owner I can't afford for employees to call in cuz they don't have a ride today.

Even if you are not driving for the company, having a valid drivers license insures that you will be able to get to work and if you are asked to drive somewhere for your job you will be able to carry out the task. It also shows that you are responsible. In NJ you have to present 6 forms of ID to get your license.

John is right about the reasons for a company wanting employees that have a drivers license. You are the one that will be responsible for getting yourself to work and on time and without a license & a vehicle then you are leaving yourself open to disappointment and being late. Unless you are within walking distance and willing to deal with the rain, heat or cold then not having a license & your own transportation will likely end up costing you your job. Forget paying for a taxi or the like cause most places out there do not pay enough for you to be able to do this. Why are there so many kids now that aren't getting their licenses?? I got mine as soon as I turned 16 and my first job other than babysitting was driving a school bus. I know you can't do that now but I'm just saying that you have to be responsible for yourself. I know it is hard to get a good start but the effort that you put in will help in your success. I have my own problems with getting a different job cause I am now 60 and I'm finding that although I had no trouble getting a job when I was younger, now it seems that no one is even willing to give me a chance (at least not where I can make the money that I need to maintain my current income level) because they feel that I will retire within just a few years so why waste the money or time on training me. Wishing Us Both Good Luck!!!
