Switchboard Operator at Blue Mountain Community College

I am just totally numb. I was just fired this morning because quote "We need someone to work Full-time as a Legal Assistant. Your an amazing worker & you gave 110%. " So I got a letter of reference, and my last check and that was that. Strangely I was hired 6 almost 7 months ago for a part-time position (20-28 hrs a wk), as a Receptionist. I went up from Receptionist to Office Assistant/Receptionist/Sort of Legal Assistant. I was never fully trained, as co-workers would not fully train me. It's like they didn't want me to know how to be a Legal Assistant? I might add they hired someone at the first of this month, and she has only made it to work 6 days the ENTIRE month. Also from what I gathered she is taking over my position. Hmmm. She will need training TOO. Idk. maybe I dodged a bullet. But where I live white collar jobs are hard to come by....Just feels like a HUGE waste of my time. #terminated

I understand to how frustrating that can be! I too have had some kind of experience in this regard. Except for me, now I have been back stabbed.

I am sorry for you as well. I think there were undercurrents of a bad business with no regards for their employees. I went through the same thing. 5 mths and then terminated with them telling lies about me. terrible and I was 65. But, when I took this position in my gut I felt something was not right but I took it anyway wanting to work.Take care of yourself, and always rememer what goes around comes around.

Termination is always a mess and sometimes tacky. Two parties never agree regardless. Sometimes the reason for termination is based on feelings and supposition. No valid reasons. Termination with no due process. Now you need to look for a job, spend time and money because sometimes unemployment doesn't want to compensate you for your loss. How do you prove to them why you got terminated when your boss is telling them what you did to get terminated. He said she said. So termination is no fun. But if you know you worked hard and was honest through it all, that's all that matters. Do your best to find a better job regardless of the circumstances. I am 68. You think anyone wants to hire an older person?

Generally speaking, an employer cannot layoff an employee only to then immediately hire a new employee to fill the layoff employee's position. If this occurs, then If the job offered was suitable, your claim objections must be examined for good cause. Personal reasons for refusing suitable work may include illness, hospitalization, vacation, forgetting to report for interview, lack of child care or transportation. If you refuse to accept full time work and the company need your service full time They can let you go if you reject a suitable offer of employment.

I'd take it as a lay-off. Mainly because you did receive a reference letter. There could be a number of reasons that you were let go. You be trainable in the legal assistant position, but perhaps the other person could've already had more actual legal training and transferable skills and experience or exposure. I didn't work out at a job and was released prior to my probationary time. I "checked all the boxes" regarding qualifications and experience, but I was told that i wasn't a "good fit." I was actually okay with it. Five years ago i found a position that makes me very happy!

Take this as a positive learning experience. I remember being thrown to the pack of wolves as a freelance videographer and in quite a few of the unrelated jobs that I had. Always take something good away from it.
