It’s hard to ask for a reference, let alone trying to figure out who could best position you to get the job, right? I have friends that have had bad experiences when they have a family member or a friend step in to vouch for them. I have always told them it can get risky very fast, so it’s not something I would recommend.

I can say with confidence that letters of recommendation are needed not only when applying for a job. The university currently requires a letter of recommendation from a dentist to consider me as a future dentist. I think they are trying to get a fair opinion from an experienced dentist about my personality, right? I am still at a loss as to how one can write such a letter.
Sometimes even someone who worked above you but wasn't your direct supervisor necessarily, could know you well enough professionally to be used as a reference in a pinch!

I would ask a family member or old boss for a reference
It’s funny cause I usually put a lot of thought into who I put for references. But low and behold none I mean absolutely zero of my last 6 jobs even bothered to contact any of them…. That goes the same with past job references
