I think a lot of times we forget just how great it is to receive a handwritten thank-you note! In the last retail position I held, we were required to write a thank-you note to each customer who spent over a certain dollar amount. This was a strategy I chose to adopt when I opened up my online store, but I try to write a handwritten note for every order.
What are some other personal touches you've found to be helpful when building a relationship with a customer?

Eye contact, smile and positive body language. Go the extra mile for all customers. Customers may only make small purchases, but they may have friends or colleagues that are looking for a good company to make large purchases, this will give you the upper hand when it comes to word of mouth. Building rapport will get you a long ways also. Customers like when you talk about small things outside of the work environment. Try to learn what your customers likes and dislikes are.

Smiling is the key! You should always ask how's their day, or if they find everything fine, etc.

Writing emails follow up. Send feedback show that I really care.

Smiling and greeting your customers are helpful in building a good relationship.

I call my clients just to check in to see how they are doing. I make it a personal call, not a sales or business call.

It is when you understand what your customers value, show your genuinely care adapt to their pace, Let your brand be your guide Model the behaviour you want them to see and Remember that relationships are built over time

Greetings cards are a nice way of saying thanks. You can also support a local artist to make you one.

I have found it easy to connect with guest and build relationships with them in the hotel industry by remembering their names and addressing them by their name. Also, finding common ground between the two of us...maybe something that we both enjoy or an event that we may enjoy attending.

Good call—customers really like seeing thank you notes! Especially if they're handwritten and personalized.
Adding a sample of another product to their order can wow customers too. Especially if they've made a big purchase. Fragrance and cosmetic vendors often supply retailers with tons of samples. Of course, this can lead to future sales as well.
I worked for an insurance rep who would personally deliver everyone's policy. Most reps would mail them or deliver them only if it was a big policy. But my boss would deliver each one not matter the amount. I think this was really appreaciated by his clients.
