When to Mention You're a Parent

I see a lot of folks posting their parental status in their resumes/profiles as if this will court sympathy from companies and encourage them to hire you because you are responsible for another living being.

By doing this, you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

While companies can't discriminate against you for being a parent, they may find other reasons not to hire you.

When you announce that you have kids, what a potential employer hears is, I most likely will need a lot of time off over the years.

While on the job search, and in interviews, keep your personal life private. Your goal is to endear employers to your skills and experience. If you mention being a single parent, parent, foster parent, etc...remove it

You will have plenty of time once you're hired to talk about your kids.
