Ok I have a VERY personal connection to this story because many years ago I was harassed when a male employee put his hands on me, twice. I first want to say how deeply sorry and I know just how awful that feels Jennifer Lewis I am sure like me you really wanted to punch him, but all I could do was tell him to stop and asked him what exactly it was he thought he was doing and that it was clearly NOT ok.
So the first thing is first, this is NOT your fault.
Secondly, that job should be ASHAMED and reported. I would Tweet, post, review them and get it out there that they not only did not support you in your safety but it took nine days and then fired you. That is crazy!!!
Third, holding ANY of your paycheck is 100% illegal. Report them to your local department of labor for unpaid wages and they will look into it and get you the remainder of your paycheck. Just make sure to provide previous paystubs. They cannot pick and choose how much they pay you!
I would also consider legal action. Is that individual who harassed you still working there??
So when I came forward and reported the person who touched me, he was fired and then about 10 other women (and one man) came forward and said that they had been harassed by him previously and that they were scared to stand up. I wasn't and you weren't and you should NOT be punished for that!
In the meantime see a counselor if you feel upset, I did because let's face it, it's traumatic. Take care of yourself and find a job where you feel safe. Under NO circumstances should anyone touch you or harass you.
Stay strong Jennifer.
