Restaurant Worker / Designer / Marketing
  • A restaurant job is not like brain surgery. It is a simple job, but it requires skills. Those skills come with experience.

  • Restaurant shifts can be long and late at night.

  • Working in front of the house or back doesn’t matter because the job requires you to be on your feet, moving around, and carrying things for long periods.

  • The restaurant job is not great for everyone. The shift can be stressful when it gets busy. If you are not multi-task, it could be a stressful night.

  • if you work in the front of the house, you have to be polite all the time towards guests.

These are the challenges I remember. Let me know about other challenges with working in a restaurant. Please, add your comments.

The key to it is “on your feet!” My feet and legs are both ruined from working the necessary hours to make a decent living, if you can ever call it that. I would work 70, 80 hours a week, and bring home less than $400. My back is permanently disabled, my legs still get cramps at night, and the pain is excruciating. My spine has bulges in 5 vertebrae, and my feet won’t stop expanding, stressing my Achilles heels and up and down my spine. I would have to soak my feet every night when I got home. Oh, and tge alcoholism is rampant amongst restaurant owners. They don’t tell you that you have to stay and socialize with everybody else, but ya kinda do have to, or else they will gang up on you and force you out by putting so much work on your plate that no human could ever realistically keep up with. Then, you suddenly find yourself driving home drunk at rush hour un the mornings! I had to leave and get a job in construction. The pay wasn’t as good, but at least I was able to quit drinking! Although it didn’t do my poor back any favors. I had to eventually go back to school and get a degree, so I could get a real job. That’s the lesson in all of this: don’t waste your youth breaking your back to make $400 a week. Go to school. Get a degree in something that will make you happy. In this job market, having a masters degree is the only real option. Without it, you will flounder around endlessly with all the rest of the bottom feeders, and it may not end pretty.

Entertainment and making a hospitality effort are key. Essentially you write down people's requests bring them and clear away empty plates. I feel it is also a great way to keep fit.
