hi valerie, not only was it discrimination, it is totally against the law. they cannot ask you your age, when year you graduated from high school or college for that matter. when you're applying for jobs, don't date how long you were there, list your responsibilities, your title, awards, and some of the skills you attained while there. with the fact that, they asked you your age, file a complaint with your state's commission on civil rights or file with the EEOC, For employment discrimination. they asked you something that you should not have answered, but you were not aware of that, so now you know, any questions about age are off limits, and/or questions regarding when you graduated. to answer you, YES, they did that to screen you out.

Yeah, but every job as an application you have to complete along with resume. On the application they ask for your birth date, graduation dates from high school and college

No it wasn't. How did he just randomly guess 51? Either way they have the right to ask to determine if you a good fit for the job. If it was physical work than a younger person would be a better canidate for the job. They can ask any question they want except religion, sexual preference, if your a citizen or not and race.

That potentially could be discrimination unless they can provide proof otherwise.

It could be. Have you followed up with the manager? Good luck.

You don't have to answer that, and they know that. But nobody gets on their case about it. You can always say, "I decline from answering that" or just change the subject! (I'm also about that age).
