Is this a legitimate interview question?

I’ve often been asked if I’m married on interviews. I can’t tell if it’s a job related question or a pick-up line. Is this a legal interview question? How should I respond without ruining my application status?

Ack, they shouldn't be asking you that! I heard a lot of times interviewers will ask women that question as a sneaky way of trying to determine if they have kids. It ties into this terrible belief that married women with kids won't contribute as much to the organization. I would absolutely respond with "I'd prefer not to answer that" and leave it at that.

Hi Shelby, so sorry you've been experiencing this level of un-professionalism during interviews. Asking about your marital status is a totally illegal question although many recruiters have learned to get this info in-directly. Just say your not comfortable answering that question if your asked again then bring it up with the HR office if you feel its was a determining factor for employment.
