I'm concerned because a potential employer requested that I fill out a seven year history background check prior to even giving me a conditional job offer. I researched if this is legal and it depends on the state but since it's an online job I don't think that is relevant. I researched to see if I was scammed but as far as I can tell it is legitimate. But I was supposed to hear back by now and haven't. I called last week and they said they there was no update to my application yet and it should be soon but their decision isn't based on the background check. So I don't understand why they are doing one. Does this make sense to anyone?

It's a common practice now for potential employers to do background checks

Positions that deal with finance, hire and fire authority, government contract or actual government work or Public Trust are usually the descriptions they use for positions that require this kind of background. Determining Eligibility before granting an offer is required, especially for teachers, cops, bank tellers, nurses. there's lots of positions that need to be vetted before being offered a position.

I'm Ohio the employer has to give you a conditional offer letter prior to asking you for a background check.

Makes perfect sense. I know if I was owner, I'd want to know who's running around loose in my co...

The company I currently work for did a background check prior to hiring me. They also wanted to make sure that I graduated from highschool. Companies like to do these things prior to hiring you so they don't have to fire you if they don't see something they like when all the checks come back. And for them to tell you your background check isn't gonna influence weather their decision is incorrect sir. If they see something on they don't like, like let's say larceny? Then I bet you you'll still be looking for a job.
