IF - you are a critical/key employee - then you cannot be easily replaced by a substitute. Your work - requires your specific knowledge of the business - it will be left undone - until your return (or permanent replacement). That's job-security. I have never been allowed - more than 2wks (continuous) vacation - "IF - they could do without me longer - they wouldn't need me back" (direct quote - from multiple prior managers!)

PTO = Personal Time OFF - intended for flexible leave - for sickness / Dr. visits / personal business (like mortgage signing) / funerals /// . Not to be confused with Holidays or Vacations. Many companies - (prefer) will pay for unused PTO hrs.

I take my PTO regardless of how anyone feels. You earned it, you should use. Don't feel guilty. I know I don't.
