My friend from university texted me today with bad news. His mom has been laid off after 18 years with a manufacturing company. I told my friend I'd ask the Jobcase community...
What are the things she should do next to bounce back? #jobsearch #termination #whatsnext

First...take a breather. Things like this are an assault to our emotions..."what did I do wrong?"... NOTHING!!! What do I do now? Again, take a breath and reassess your options with an open mind. File for unemployment benefits. Check and double check your finances. More than anything, DO NOT PANIC. Check for jobs online, through friends, at the unemployment office. You've got this!

Very sorry to hear of your friend's mother's situation. Age discrimination is VERY real, but hard to prove. However, after 18 years of being a good and dependable employee, it's very suspicious that they just terminate her. Esp with a shortage of workers across all industries.
The mother needs to update her resume. Consider posting it with a temp agency/ agencies, and then following up by going in person to speak to them. Take a hard copy of the resume to give to them.
What was her position with the manufacturing co? Line worker? Admin?

file a lawsuit for age discrimination. Tell them the job has been harassing her, calling her slow, she's the walking dead, etc. That will get her retirement money from that Bastart of a company. They will settle out of court before they let it go to trial.
