International student unemployment due to COVID-19

Hello, my name is Hewie and I am in a tough situation right now. Here is my background. I am an international student who graduated in December 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering. I also got my Engineer in Training certificate in Environmental Engineering.

I am currently in OPT right now and the issued date was on February 1st. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), my unemployment cannot last more than 90 days, which is approximately by the end of April. If I am unemployed by the end of April, I have to get back to Hong Kong... I was supposed to have a few interviews at the end of March but due to COVID-19, my interview appointments had to cancel or postpone.

I am still waiting for further notice from USCIS. I have been losing sleep worrying about my status and financial security. I would really hope some civil/environmental engineering companies can give me an interview chance. It can be any paid/unpaid position!

Hi Hewie, as an international myself, I totally understand the situation you are in. This is a tough time for international students, but we are here together. As I know, you can do multiple jobs at the same time during the 1st year OPT period to meet the 20hr weekly working minimum. 1st suggestion would be: keep applying even if you don't hear back from most.

Also, instead of looking at just physical jobs, try applying for some remote jobs. Jobcase just added a 'remote work only' filter on the jobs page. Take a look and you might find something that works for you.

Hey Hewie, I'm sorry to hear about your current situation...looks like there are a lot of people in a similar situation, below is a link to a petition circulating requesting an extension of the 90 day unemployment period...I signed it!

Also, I noticed you are in the Miami, FL area...I did a quick search here on Jobcase for "environmental engineering" jobs in S Florida and there are several companies with recent job postings...you will likely need to be flexible, the job you get may not be the job you thought you'd take right after college, but you can still work in the industry and gain valuable experience.

Keep your head up and moving forward and if you ever want to bounce any questions off an objective recruiter please message me directly!

Hi Hewie Ho , thanks for taking the rime to share you employment concern with this community. I think the main question you need to be considering within all you job accessibility in the US is this...

What key skills, work experience, and/or accomplishments do I have that no other eligible US resident job seekers lacks or does not have.

Competition if fierce for jobs right now and US employers aren't getting any extra kudos/recognition for hiring non US citizens. You have to focus on highlighting what makes you stand out among the other, more eligible candidates. Good Luck!

Brother the government doesn't get in any hurry to do anything here. It will take time, and I can't afford to pay you a salary, but I have a place you could stay if you are unable to find or afford more suita b le accomodations. I recently started an online sales hobby. I could use some help with somei that's great with computers an internet, for rent payment . 🙂

Howie any chance you can consult with a lawyer to see if any exceptions can be made? Could be an opportunity to find more international students together to petition the USCIS. I wish I could do more to help but I can at least offer my support. Don't give up!
