The Saddest Thing I've Had to Do: Declining an Offer from a Great Company

After more than a year a infuriating and sometimes heartbreaking job search as I struggled to complete grad school while working fulltime, I finally scored an interview with a Fortune 100 company. I prepared. I was excited. I got an offer: 75K base, 12.5K signing bonus, and 14K relocation package. I have to decline.

The state income tax and the cost of living compared to where I live now making 62K would actually result in a decline in my quality of life. I'm so depressed. I really wanted to have a career at this company. It's a fantastic company, but with student loan repayment approaching I would be a working poor.

Hi RD: I'm so sorry to hear you had to turn down that great opportunity because of student loans - it makes me so sad that the state of education today has limited upward mobility for a lot of young people. Have you explored all your repayment options? I have student loans as well, so I'm an unwilling expert on them haha. A lot of loan repayment plans can be based on your income.

Disgusted!

I have been at my current job since 2010! I started at $7.50 per hour, now up to $10.35! Since our company was merged with another company it has gone down hill! First they cut my hours and took away my health benefits! I had to go on medicaid! Now they have stopped giving breaks and lunches even though I work 8-9 hour shifts! I am 62 and being on my feet for that long without anything to drink is torture!!! I went to HR to complain, I was brought into managers office and basically reprimanded for calling, and as retaliation I was taken off my regular job at customer servce, which I love and waited 4 years to work up to! When I confronted my manager about this retaliation, she just said " Well I was very mad" I am collecting my social security, lost my medicaid, and need this job to survive!!!

Don't always get what you want.

Fast food jobs are okay, but I am too old to be working for $7-8 an hour flipping burgers. Those companies are to quick to hire. I apply for a Court House job position, was told they have hired someone for that position already. 3 weeks later come to fine out they hired someone who does not have the qualification for the job. I maybe wrong but you don't always get what you in life. :)

Have the best news in a long time

It's been a long past 7 years, my husband is retired and has Copd, we have 3 daughters. Have been working 2 jobs for the longest with no avail trying to manage the bills, the girls needs. But I was just offered a job with an amazing company. Is the best Christmas present I could have asked for. The way for me to earn enough on one income to provide for my girls. Am so happy, only prayed for the opportunity to succeed and I would bust my tail through my efforts to do that. Finally, finally have that! Am ever so thankful. Small gains, and struggling for so long has finally put me in a position to succeed. Merry Christmas everyone!

Why no overtime pay???

You've got to be kidding me. Just found out that the new overtime pay law just got blocked by a federal judge. So employers can keep taking advantage of us and make us work long hours without paying us properly? What the hell??

You have a gross misunderstanding of the recent"block" It was a j-level non-udges decision to block theObamna administration's revision of the existing law (FLSA - do a Google search on that before you show your ignoranc eagain) that defines the pay threshold for non-exempt salary levels. Lower pay levels for that category of employee are already protected from being asked to work more than 40 hours in a week without getting overtime pay. The new regulations would have raised the threshold, causing companies to have to pay higher-salaried employees for even one or two extra hours. But workers in positions labeled as Exempt have never been protected, and the blocked action would not have affected them. So,yed, it is possibl ethat someone was, indeed, " kidding" you.

The cost of living is cheaper in the midwest than the east coast generally, so you may need to look and lowering your salary requirements just a little. I think there is a site out there that gives you an idea of what the salary would be for specific jobs in different states/cities based on the cost of living and whatnot.

Am I Really Sexist?

At least that’s what current studies are showing. Sexism of the brash and vulgar kind (cough TRUMP cough) isn’t nearly as common today as the subtle little ways we put each other in boxes and hold each other back. This article is super interesting. A research team sent science faculty at some big universities applications for scientist positions they had open. The resumes were EXACTLY THE SAME, except for a male or female name. BUT THE RESUME WITH THE MALE NAME was always ranked higher and even given HIGHER PAY.

i think deceptive bias principles are common practice for all underserved communities. The H. Clinton campaign probably isn’t the best examples but it shows how we struggle to accept women in positions of power.

I’ve noticed more women working in middle management jobs or higher. I can’t remember the last time I had a male manager or department director. Not sure if they earn the same or more than their male counterparts though but it's just a matter of time before more women climb into power positions where they can directly influence that issue.
