After the job

I am always looking for great opportunities in life and to grow my soul. With that being said even after I get the job or jobs I worked so hard to get I am always still looking for a better jobs and to better myself. Usually after 90 days on the job if no raise I move to a better paying job, I take it as the universe was using that job to train me for something better. When employers question my short time on jobs or reason for leaving I say to better myself all body, mind and soul. Great job hunting to you all folks

Hi estella Estella - I'm glad you are prioritizes yourself and your mind for jobs! You should always do what is best for you in regards to the job search. I think you have a great explanation for employers who question it! I hope you find a job that rewards your efforts soon!

Did you get the raise???

Whether you’re looking for a job or have one now, the time will come when you understandably will want to make more money. So, when you feel the moment has arrived to ask for a raise; follow these steps to help make it happen!

1- Make a plan Decide when you will ask and whom you will speak with. If it’s not your boss then who should this discussion take place with? Timing is also important, if your boss is going through a particularly stressful week it might be better to ask at another time!

2- Know it’s ok to ask It doesn’t make you greedy or entitled, so don’t be nervous! Your manager has likely been through this many times before and he/she expects it to happen. Be strong in your ask and know this is what is best for you. If the answer is no, you didn’t do anything wrong. My suggestion would be to follow up and ask them what would be needed to earn a raise! This way you have something to work towards to make that possible. You will also know where you stand and why.

3- Share where you want to go Companies like to know that you are in it for the long haul. So, stop and think about where you see yourself in another year. What can you bring to the company during that time? What do you personally want to accomplish? This is the time to speak up about positive things you want to progress towards at the company.

4- Know your worth and the market It’s important to know how much you are being paid compared to the current market. Sites like GlassDoor and others will help with this! Simply search for your job title, area in which you live, and then look for jobs with similar responsibilities to the ones you have now. This will give you a baseline. If you feel you are being underpaid comparably save the data you have found. This will help you put together a number in your mind that is reasonable and on target with the current market for your position!

5- Map out what you’ve accomplished This goes hand in hand with your plan! Before you ask for a raise spend some time putting together a list of all the things you’ve done over the time you’ve been there (or since your last raise). Note how far you’ve grown from the beginning to end. Be sure to pay attention to any specific accomplishments and highlight these! This will help you prove to your manager that you not only have done great things but are continuing to achieve more.

If I earned it I would get one. I didn't ask for a number and some people do. I just asked for a raise. Sometimes they came back and told me right away other times it took longer. Be prepared to wait for an answer!

What do i do about not getting my raise

So I was promised a raise if I came back to work full time and I agreed on a certain date with one of the owners along with my gm and two weeks later and still no raise I talked to my gm who directed me to my regional gm who pretty much said they can't help me so I them emailed the owners and have still heard nothing what do I do

I've seen this issue time & time again. It's important whenever you discuss a pay raise to get that in writing. It's unfortunate that you can't just take their word for it cause situations like this can happen. I hope you get your raise. Best of luck!

over worked an underpaied

Well every cumpaney i have worked for over the past 10 years has made me belieave i was going to be promoted . Worked me like a slave and then no permotion and a joke for a rase i worked for winn dixie for about 3 years never mised a day of work allways gave110 % eaven getting groshrie baskets in the rain cold wet rain at that for like a 12 houer shift and when they had a open fulltime positon they promoted a coworker who was only imploied with the cumpaney for like 3 munths and ihad been ther for like 2 or 3 years and they wonder y peopple get mad and quet ther job!!!

Underpaid

I've been at my job for 16 years and dont get the recognition or praise that I should. I have been overlooked and feel very disrespected. It's time for me to move on I think. I have been managing for the past 13 years and have put apps in and no return on anything. What's wrong with me? Or is it that none wants to deal with training me on something different

Nothing is wrong with you Reginald Heard but have you asked for a raise? In my experience if you want something you need to go for it because in most cases they aren't going to come forward on their own and ask if you want to make more money. Be proactive and follow these steps before you consider quitting!

When you are in your evaluations always follow up with these questions:

What is the next step that I can move up to?

Do you think I am ready for that step?

What would be my best course of action to be better prepared for that next step?

Be prepared for honest feedback. But you can use that feedback between evaluation periods in order to make the improvements and be the one they are looking for to move up into the higher paying job.

Raise and ambition

So the owner of my job is really impress with my work and abilities to multitask and go from cold bar to serving drinks. They finally got me on a regular schedule set. They told me they lover how quickly I get work done and satisfy customers to make them feel like their right at home. And also customer have been giving me outstanding reviews to the owner

Asking For A Raise

I walked into my bosses office and told him that I need a raise.He told me that I make too much money. I reminded him that when he got the job he received a $100,000 a year raise which was not too shabby at all. He now makes $350,000 and I make $25,000. I told him that I want to make at least $250,000 dollars a year or else I will head to Harvard University and teach history and make $750,000 a year plus I will get a clothing allowance, travel allowance, etc. I told him that we should get this thing ironed out by January 1,2017. He told me that I am NUTS!!! To wit I replied only on Tuesday's. He called his attorney and told him what I wanted. His attorney said no. Give him 29,000 dollars a year. My attorney said that I should get at least $100,000 as Chairman Of The History Department at my school. If all else fails I will walk into his office and tell him that I have a new job at Harvard University teaching Modern European History, Modern German History and Modern Russian History along with World War I and World War II. I am also tempted to fly to Dubai and teach there. I know that they pay very well and its all tax-free. What do you think about this? Please let me know. Steven M. Fanale

Asking for a raise?

So I've got a decent job. No benefits or anything and he hired me in the spot. Well, when he asked how much I want I froze and blurted out $10/hr. (Ridiculous on my part) well I found out the position was paying 14/hr. And now I'm kicking myself. .. another employee told me to just tell them I had another job offer but I really want to stay , and can they give me 14 , I dont know what to do or how to go about doing it, I've only been there a week, but they all really like me and I think I'm doing pretty good. Help!

Hi, what I normally do is I go onto Glassdoor to check the employer's ratings/reviews and I try to find an average pay for the position I have applied for. For an example, if I've applied for a Manager position with XYZ I will go to Glassdoor and see any salaries that come up under the position with XYZ. If not then you can do a search online to see the average salary that comes up. Also, remember that the location makes a difference in pay as well. In the future, you could say, "I am willing to negotiate the salary, however, I am seeking the salary range between 50k-65k.

All you need to do is say it just like this" now that you have seen my hard work and dedication and I've proven myself to be worthy of the job is it possible to get the salary of which one is qualified for and not the salary of one hoping to land the job? Waite a nother week or so before presenting him/her. Prove yourself,. His way your not just speaking of a very short period but of consistency, dedication day in day out, and don't be shy , quiet but strong and true, and of course be happy, cheerfull ,"be positive in all you do" be patient and stay true in your approach to yourself. I've always said"stay true to yourself and you can never go wrong.... Good luck

Orientation for a payraise

In order for me to get my payraise I need to go throught new hire orientation again. I was offered a new position and is now working in that departmant for 2 weeks, I notice my salary did not reflect the increase, so I asked why and was told that inorder for me to get my raise I need to through new hire orientation again. My question is WHY ???. I can understand dept.training but orientation ? Please can someone explain.thanks

There are many reasons why a company has certain procedures that they follow. Perhaps the most important one being to legally protect themself. As an employee, we do well to adhere to their policies and procedures if they are within the confines of the law. You want to show them that you are part of the business and are an asset to the business. If you are the oil that helps the business machine to run, you make yourself necessary or even vital and your employers will see this. The results will be good for both you and your company. Congratulation on your promotion and salary increase.

Every position is different and changing to a new position while working for that organization. Once I had to go through the same steps. With raise comes other things nothing is given freely. Go for it!!! The important thing u have a job. Count your blessings. Give praise for that. I am happy for u

Getting ahead -- How do you get that promotion?

How should people turn jobs into careers? If you are currently employed, what are you doing to make sure that you have a 'bigger job' next year (either more money, more responsibility, different responsibility or whatever else your goals are).
In general, I am really interested in what other Jobcasers have to say about this - so I don't want to bias with my thoughts up front. But I will say that the first step is identifying what it is you want. If you don't articulate the goal to yourself then how will you get it?? This is a time in labor markets where you need to be your own Agent and take charge of your own career. Don't wait for someone in a corner office to chart your career path for you - you need to do it yourself.

Networking and looking for mentoring opportunities has helped me get ahead in the past. I’ve worked for companies where one has to apply for advanced job openings so building a good reputation and bonding with the right people is key to being selected from an application pool. Who you know and who know’s you is important.

I don’t think knowing where you are going should be pre-requisite for advancing, the world is changing so fast, that it’s hard to predict the future. From my experience there are several keys for advancement:

  • Find the sweet spot between your talents, interests and business needs. You need to be above average in what you do.
  • Don’t stop learning, about your profession, industry and the world. Don’t expect to be taught.
  • You most generate value for your employer. It doesn’t matter how many years you have being working, or if you are working in the weekends. If in the end of the day, you don’t generate value, it doesn’t matter.
