Fellow Jobcasers:

I am dismayed at the number of my fellow Jobcasers who claim to have applied to "a hundred different jobs", but receive no responses. The solution to that problem is simple: populate your profile!

You guys remember Leonardo di Caprio's character in Titanic, Jack Dawson? Remember how he said that he made his own luck? So do we.

Start by posting your work experience from the most recent on back. Fill it with achievements and figures before moving to the day-to-day descriptions. You did something, and that's amazing! No work experience? Tell us how you managed your household and put your husband on an allowance. Still in school? Tell us about your good grades, your clubs, honor rolls, and Dean's lists. Just because you don't get paid to study, it doesn't mean that it isn't a career.

Education receives a similar treatment. Again, that Varsity Letter means something, even if you're not professional sports material. FFA? 4-H? VICA? Job Corps? They count more than you think!

Licenses and Certifications: You can't flip a burger without a Food Handler's Card, can you? Put it in your profile!

Your profile is the melody, and you have to toot your own horn. Because if there's no tooting, there is no music!

Maryland... oh yes, there are a lot of clerical jobs in defense contracts and the firms which work on those contracts. But do tell, Bonnie which clerk are you? Clerk/typist? File clerk? Office generalist? Administrative Assistant? Finance clerk? Payroll clerk? Legal clerk? Office Technology Specialist? I would know, but you haven't filled out your profile. Get that done before you throw darts blindfolded.

The toughest part about landing a job right now is...

A lot of places are on a hiring freeze.

Ricky, Lisa: have you considered bypassing the social distancing and hiring freezes, and going into an Information Technology career? It's a growing field and the computers won't give you cooties.

People, get out your comfort zone and try finding work doing something else. If the restaurants are open for takeout and delivery, don't cry about job as a waiter and be a delivery driver. If you have a skill you haven't put to work yet, apply in that field. There are jobs out there. Not all jobs available are working at a diminished capacity. There is full-time work to be found! Go for it!

And to think that we used to ignore our elders... at least until we found ourselves in a situation where we heard our elders' advice loud and clear. "So this is what they warned me about!" And we don't seem so surprised when it dawns on us, do we?

Well, I hope that today's youth heed old warnings better than we did. Old warnings, because they are older than our parents and grandparents.
