Shipt is an on-demand delivery service with Shoppers working across the United States. It’s a brand that gives customers convenience, as they can shop online at their favorite stores and have their items hand-delivered.

So far, more than 1.2 million orders have been delivered via this platform. The brand’s core values are drive, rally, positivity, authenticity, and caring.

Shipt Shoppers are independent contractors, and Shipt is looking to grow its team. The company also has other roles, such as customer service representatives and executive assistants.

What is Shipt?

After an order is placed, a Shipt Shopper will visit the store and pick up the items before bringing them to the customer. From fresh groceries to electronics to alcohol, Shipt will deliver it.

The company relies on its community of Shoppers, who work as independent contractors.

Same-day delivery is usually available with Shipt, and customers can either pay a flat-rate delivery fee or purchase a yearly membership. Some of Shipt’s most popular partner stores include Costco, Target, Safeway, CVS, and Roche Bros.

Shipt was founded in 2014, and the current CEO is Kelly Caruso. The company headquarters are in Birmingham, Alabama.

In 2017, Target Corporation bought Shipt, and it remains Shipt’s parent company today. Shipt’s top competitors include Gopuff and Instacart.

What do you need to work at Shipt?

To work as a Shipt Shopper, you'll need to be at least 18 years old. You'll need a valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle that's a 1997 model or newer.

To work as a Shopper, you should feel comfortable lifting up to 40 pounds and loading and unloading your vehicle. And you should have an iPhone or Android smartphone that's compatible with the Shipt app.

Product knowledge will be an advantage. Shipt doesn't withhold taxes, so you'll have to handle your own tax obligations.

If you're applying for an hourly position, the minimum requirements can vary between roles. All of the information you'll need will be in the job advertisement.

Shipt offers a positive company culture, and you'll need to be a team player to work there. Shipt prefers employees who have good communication and time management skills.

How do you apply for a job at Shipt?

The application process depends on the role you're applying for. If the role is a Shopper position, there are a few steps to follow. If you like, you can opt in to receive SMS notifications to get updates throughout the application process.

First, you’ll need to visit the Shipt Shopper page and complete the registration form. Make sure you use your legal name, as it has to match your Social Security number. You’ll also need to enter your email address, phone number, and location.

Next, you’ll need to complete each application section, which will take around 10 minutes. During this time, you’ll need to share your work history and education.

The interview usually has two parts. You’ll need to answer a few written questions, which are a mix of multiple-choice and essay questions. Then, you’ll have to answer questions via a live video recording.

If your application is approved, you’ll be sent a starter kit with a prepaid card and merchandise. You can then download the app and start working.

For all other job types, you can visit the Shipt careers page. Browse jobs near you, and when you find a good fit, hit the “apply now” button.

You’ll need to create a job seeker account and upload your details. To apply for a role, you can do the autofill method using your resume, apply manually, or use a previous application.

Does Shipt do a background check?

If you want to work at Shipt, you'll need to pass a background check. Shipt uses a third-party company called Checkr to process your background report.

The background check comes at no cost to you, but you'll need to give permission for it to happen. If you deny the background check request, you won't get the job.

The Checkr background check is thorough and focuses on a few different areas. The company will use your Social Security number, name, and address to verify your employment history and education.

Shipt wants to keep you, your fellow shoppers, customers, and retailers safe. That is why they do a criminal background check. It goes back at least seven years and flags any misdemeanors or felonies on databases from across the country.

Shipt considers the individual issues in your background report before deciding whether to hire you. In some cases, you may still get the role if you have a criminal record.

Shoppers can also expect a driving record check. You'll be on the road representing the brand, so a safe driving history is a must-have. The driving check also verifies that your license is valid.

A credit check isn't usually part of the mix unless the role you’re going for is a financial one.

Does Shipt do a drug test?

​​For Shopper jobs, there's no drug test. Once you get through the application process and background check, you'll be able to start working.

However, any previous drug-related offenses will show up on your background check. For example, if you've been convicted of drug trafficking or manufacturing, that may be a red flag.

The company also prioritizes a safe driving history. If you have any prior DUI (driving under the influence) offenses, they could impact your chances of getting a Shopper position.

If you have an accident while working, you may need to be tested for drug or alcohol use.

For other corporate positions, a urine drug test may be part of the hiring process.

For those who take prescription medication, it's a good idea to check with your doctor before applying for a new job. A physician’s note may be required.

What jobs are available at Shipt?

Let's take a look at some of the most popular job types at Shipt:

1. Shopper

Shipt Shoppers work independently as gig workers. When a customer places an online order for fresh foods or other goods, a local Shopper will collect it for them.

As delivery drivers, these workers drop the orders off at customers’ doors. They need excellent communication skills and confidence driving in their local area. Shoppers get a prepaid card that can be used to pay for goods.

Shoppers need to double-check orders for accuracy and make sure the items are of high quality.

If you get accepted for a Shopper job, you can choose your own hours. This is the ideal position for someone who wants to make extra money while juggling other commitments. For example, if you’re a student or you have children, a gig job can fit with your schedule.

2. Customer service representative

Shipt customer service representatives (CSRs) often work remotely from home. They offer support to customers either online or over the phone.

Customers can get in touch for a range of reasons. For example, they may have a question or a complaint. CSRs use their excellent communication skills to give each customer a positive experience.

Listening skills, computer skills, and typing skills are all essential for this role. Shipt CSRs should be organized, motivated, and able to work independently.

If you're working from home, you'll need a quiet space, a computer, and headphones.

3. Executive assistant

Want to support members of the executive team? Shipt executive assistants work closely with company leaders on a range of administrative tasks.

For example, they answer phone calls, schedule meetings, and take minutes. They also help with budgeting and planning. They make travel arrangements and look after confidential documents.

These workers need computer skills and should be confident using Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and email. If you want to apply for this role, you’ll need previous work experience in a similar position.

Attention to detail, time management, and strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role.

4. Social media specialist

If you're tech-savvy and know your way around Facebook, Instagram, and other social networking platforms, you can apply for a social media specialist position.

These workers are the digital voice of the company. They respond to followers and handle complaints on both public posts and private messages. If they can't resolve an issue, they'll refer it to the right person.

Social media specialists have a positive attitude and excellent written communication skills. They work closely with marketing and customer satisfaction team members to create a consistent experience.

To get this job, you'll need computer skills and a customer service background.

5. Shopper growth manager

Do you have leadership experience? If so, then a Shopper growth manager position could be for you.

This role is about improving the Shipt service. Shopper growth managers look for areas that need improvement and try to find solutions. They work closely with other team members to find new opportunities to boost Shipt’s shopper referral program.

Shopper growth managers use technology to create reports, set budgets, and track progress.

To get a job as a Shopper growth manager, you should be a good communicator. Computer skills and marketing experience will also be an advantage. You should be comfortable working in a team as well as independently.

Shopper growth managers should be self-motivated and show attention to detail.

What benefits can you get at Shipt?

If you work as a Shipt Shopper, you'll be an independent contractor and won't get traditional benefits. However, you'll get a flexible schedule and the ability to work around other commitments.

Shoppers can still organize their own insurance. Shipt partners with a company called Benefitplace, which has options for health, vision, and dental insurance. Shoppers can get free flu shots and tax benefits.

Those who have a full-time or part-time job at Shipt have a range of benefits.

If you meet the minimum requirements, you'll get medical, dental, and vision insurance for yourself and your dependents. Your healthcare package will also come with reduced-cost prescription coverage.

There's a 401(k) retirement plan with a company match. Each time you get paid, a portion of your salary will be set aside for your senior years.

There are other perks for eligible team members. For example, there's paid time off (PTO), volunteer days, and parental leave.

The employer has wellness programs to support your health and well-being, as well as free Shipt memberships.

How much can you make at Shipt?

Shipt Shoppers choose their own hours, so the average salary can vary depending on your schedule. For example, a Shopper who delivers goods full-time will make more than a Shopper who works only a few hours per week.

The rate can also vary depending on where you live and how busy your area is.

Once you get experience, you can make between $16.00 and $22.00 per hour. Shipt Shoppers can also unlock bonuses. If customers receive good service, they can leave a tip. When you get tips, they’re 100% yours.

But what about part-time and full-time Shipt roles?

Customer service team leaders make an average of $17.00 per hour.

Corporate communications specialists make around $20.00 per hour, and information technology specialists make $23.00 per hour.

Credit analysts make between $14.00 and $26.00 per hour, while fraud investigators make between $16.00 and $29.00 per hour.

Tips for your Shipt application

When you fill out the Shipt application, read the questions carefully. Take your time to get your answers right, and check to ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors.

If it's a Shopper job you’re going for, you'll be able to choose your delivery zone. Make sure you select the right location because you won't be able to change it. However, Shipt will also consider you for jobs in surrounding areas.

Use an email address that you use regularly. You'll get application updates via email, and the hiring manager may contact you in writing.

If you're asked to record your interview answers, try to find a quiet space. Test your microphone beforehand, and speak confidently and clearly. You'll be on live video, so choose a business casual outfit. For example, a clean, collared t-shirt is a good choice.

Research the company and the specific job so that you'll be ready to match your skills to the position.

About the Shipt written job interview stage

As mentioned, there's a written interview stage during the Shipt Shopper application process. There are four multiple-choice questions, and you have one minute to answer each one. There are also two essay questions.

The purpose of these questions is to see how you'd react in different situations.

For example, you'll be asked what you'd do if a product is out of stock and you need to make a substitution. There's also a question that asks what you'd do if you can’t find the item you need on the shelf.

There are also questions about time management and what you'll look out for when shopping for fresh foods. For example, if an item has mold on it, would you still give it to the customer? The answer would be no because quality is a priority.

Before answering these questions, think about how you'd give each customer a positive shopping experience. Most of the questions are common sense — in fact, they’re probably things you already think about when you do your own grocery shopping.
