Keeping your connections from past places of employment is so important. These individuals can speak on behalf of the work you have done at your previous place of employment. Ask them if they wouldn’t mind being your reference and if you may share their contact information with employers. Avoid asking friends or family members and stick to those you have worked with professionally. If you are unable to ask a manager, consider asking a co-worker!

There is a lot of competition out there, now more than ever so it’s important to stand apart from other applicants. Besides, it never hurts to update and refresh your skills so you are more marketable and ready to take on any new challenges.

Help your job search process by staying organized. It’s simple to fill out an application, but it’s harder to remember which jobs you have applied to, when you did so, and the status of that job application. Make a document or simply jot down information that you need to remember lately such as the company’s name, any important contact information, if you applied, when/if you spoke to anyone, as well as any upcoming interview dates. This will help you to review all of your job search information quickly so there is no confusion.
Practice your elevator pitch
Hiring managers are busy, busy, busy! **On average, you have about 30 seconds to catch their attention **and make a lasting impression during a phone screening. Make sure to “wow!” them with an expertly crafted Elevator Pitch. The goal of this pitch is to communicate:
- Who you are
- What you do
- What your goals are
- Why you would be an asset to their team
Use vibrant and colorful vocabulary to help paint an authentic picture of who you are as a professional. Be sure to practice your elevator pitch! Grab a family member, friend, coworker, pet or anyone else willing to listen and give it a go. Be sure to ask for feedback (except from your pet)!
