What can you expect? Get set because we're about to tell you everything you need to know about the Postmates background check.

What is Postmates?

Postmates is a food and grocery delivery app, and its direct competitors include GrubHub and DoorDash. Recently, Uber acquired Postmates, but it still operates as a standalone brand.

The service first began in 2011 in San Francisco. The company has a fleet of independent contractors that make deliveries by car, motorbike, and bicycle.

Customers enter their delivery address on the website or app, and they'll see a list of local shopping options. They can shop at restaurants, grocery stores, and pharmacies. Shoppers can also use the app to purchase alcohol from liquor stores.

Postmates couriers can then choose to take on the job and deliver the goods to the customer.

Because Postmates has such a large community of delivery drivers, customers can have their items delivered to their doorstep in under an hour.

Why does Postmates do a background check?

Most companies ask for a background check before you can get the job. Hiring managers want to know that both their customers and employees are safe. And, they want to verify the information you gave in your application.

The Postmates application process is all online, and one of the final stages is an extensive background check. They'll be looking at your criminal record, employment background, and driving history.

The people the company hires represent the Postmates brand, and if you work as a fleet driver, you'll be dealing with the public. This means there needs to be a high level of trust.

You'll be on the road, so Postmates wants to know you have a clean driving record. And, you'll be given a Postmates Prepaid card (PEX) to make purchases for customers, so you'll need to be financially responsible.

By going through this background process, Postmates will be confident the safety of its customers and staff is a priority.

How does the Postmates background check work?

Postmates uses a third-party company for the background check process. It'll be near the end of the hiring process, and you'll need to give your permission.

You'll need to provide a few key details to do the check. They'll usually ask for your Social Security number (SSN), full name, birthday, postal address, and driver's license. You can submit these details via email or through a secure platform.

Make sure you double-check your information to avoid delays.

There are two main things Postmates is interested in. The first is your criminal history, such as any violent crimes or sexual offenses. The second is the driving record check. This is similar to what you can expect from the Uber background check process.

Keep in mind, Postmates has a continuous background check policy. They regularly look at your records to make sure there haven't been any incidents since you started work.

Who does Postmates use for employee background checks?

Most of the time, Postmates uses a background screening company called Checkr. They search national and county-level databases to look for red flags on your record.

The background check goes through a series of stages. When it gets to pending, it means the check is in progress. If the check status moves to clear, you've met the background check criteria.

Sometimes, the screening process will reveal something on your record. If this is the case, your check will show the word consider. Postmates will then have to review the information before making a final decision.

If you're not happy with the results of the Checkr background check, you can file a dispute. You should only do this if you think there's an error with the results.

You can contact Checkr support through the customer portal, email, mail, or phone. If you need to get in touch quickly, you can call (844) 824–3257.

How long does the Postmates background check take?

Prospective drivers can expect the background report to come back between three and seven days. But, there can be delays for a number of common reasons.

For example, if you haven't filled out your details correctly, the background screening company may have to ask for extra information.

And in some states, there can be a backlog of criminal background check reports. Not all records are filed electronically, so you could have to wait for traditional paper processing.

If it's taking too long or you're not sure about what comes next, you can ask Checkr for your background check status.

What is shown on a background check?

After you've filled out the background check consent form, the third-party company will look at your criminal offenses and driving record. Here are a few things that could be flagged:

Criminal record

Suppose your public records show a history of violent crimes, driving under the influence (DUI), drug-related offenses, felony, theft, property damage, or sexual crimes. In that case, the fleet app will usually deny your application.

However, these may be an exception due to your circumstances. If you've turned your life around, had rehabilitation, or have a case that could be dropped, you can discuss this with Postmates.

They’re looking for the most serious crimes, so those with minor offenses may still be considered.

If something on your criminal record doesn’t look right, don’t forget you can dispute the report.

Driving record

The Postmates fleet is made up of drivers, motorcyclists, and cyclists. To apply, you'll need a valid driver's license. They want to know you'll be safe on the road, which is why there's a thorough driving record check.

First, they'll make sure your driver's license is valid and hasn't been suspended. Red flags include traffic law violations, accidents, motor crimes, hit-and-runs, and reckless driving.

Some smaller incidents, such as parking infringements, may not influence hiring decisions. But, anything significant within the past seven years could affect your chances of getting a job.

If you have a history as a safe driver, this part of the screening process will be a breeze.

What else do you need to work for Postmates?

If you want a Postmates delivery job, there are other minimum requirements. You'll need to be at least 18 years old or 21 if you're making alcohol deliveries.

There are no minimum vehicle requirements for those who are driving a car or motorcycle. But, you'll need to have a reliable mode of transport if you want to be successful in this role. And, your vehicle needs to be registered with insurance in case you have an accident on the job.

If you don't have a car, motorcycle, or bicycle, you could still work for Postmates. In more populated areas like big cities, there may be the option to walk with your deliveries.

New team members have virtual onboarding sessions. You'll need to give them your direct payment information and complete a W-9 form. You'll be working as an independent contractor, so you'll need to keep on top of your own tax records.

And, you'll need a smartphone with reliable internet. Fleet drivers use an app to accept orders and communicate with customers.

Remember, you'll need to be self-motivated and give excellent customer service.
