Lyft Careers: What You Need to Know
Jump to section

Lyft is one of the best-known companies in the world of ride-sharing apps. If you're looking for a career in the transportation industry, Lyft is a great option to consider.

Lyft had 4,453 full-time workers in 2021, and approximately 1.4 million Lyft drivers across the United States and Toronto in 2022.

Below, you'll learn everything about Lyft careers. We’ll talk about average salaries, employee benefits, types of jobs, and more.

What is Lyft?

Lyft, Inc. is a mobility service that offers vehicles-for hire, ride-sharing (like Uber), motorized scooters, food delivery in the U.S. and select cities in Canada, and more.

The company was launched in the summer of 2012 and has since become the second-largest ride-sharing service provider. Its market share stood at 31% in July 2021 and continues to increase.

Some of Lyft’s most popular locations include:

  • San Francisco, California

  • Seattle, Washington

  • Nashville, Tennessee

  • New York, New York

  • Miami, Florida

  • Austin, Texas

  • Palo Alto, California

  • Denver, Colorado

  • Washington, District of Columbia

  • Chicago, Illinois

There are also many other locations to choose from. Therefore, chances are good that you’ll be able to find a job with Lyft in or close to your area.

How much does Lyft pay its employees?

Lyft employees make $20.37 per hour on average. However, drivers earn $13 per hour on average.

When we talk about Lyft employees, we're discussing two types of workers:

  • Those who work in the corporate office and

  • Lyft drivers

Workers in the corporate office include social media associates, copywriters, and customer support representatives. Lyft drivers, on the other hand, are the ones who actually provide transportation services to customers.

Corporate employees earn a salary, while drivers are paid per ride.

While $13 per hour may not seem like a lot, drivers can also receive tips from customers. In fact, tips make up a significant part of their earnings. Learn how you can earn money as a Lyft driver.

In contrast, corporate employees earn fixed salaries. For example, senior copywriters earn $44 per hour on average, while recruiting coordinators make an average of $24 per hour.

Corporate employees’ salaries depend on their experience and position. Individuals with more experience and higher positions tend to earn more.

Meanwhile, drivers can earn more by giving more rides and working longer hours. If they work during prime hours (which we’ll touch upon later), they can earn more per ride.

Types of Lyft careers

As mentioned, you can work at Lyft as a driver or apply for one of Lyft's corporate jobs.

How do drivers and corporate jobs at Lyft differ?

  • Salaries: Corporate employees earn more than drivers. Drivers have the opportunity to earn tips, though, which can increase their earnings.

  • Benefits: Corporate employees usually have access to more comprehensive benefits packages than drivers. These benefits can include health insurance and 401k plans.

  • Work schedule: Corporate employees typically have a set work schedule, while drivers can set their own hours.

  • Location: Corporate employees are based in Lyft's headquarters. Lyft has 45 different locations where corporate employees can find work. Meanwhile, drivers can work from anywhere in the United States.

The type of job you choose will depend on your qualifications and preferences. However, this doesn't mean you can’t score a corporate job if you don’t have high-end qualifications.

Lyft offers a wide variety of entry-level positions in the customer service and support department. Having previous work experience in customer service is a great asset.

Lyft also offers corporate jobs in other categories, from finance to administration to data science.

Here are some of Lyft’s top corporate jobs:

1. Customer service associate

Customer service associates assist customers with any troubles or questions they may have. They often help customers over the phone (in a customer service center), but they may also occasionally help them face-to-face.

Customer service associates can help customers resolve problems with the app, billing, or their account. Customer service associates also help drivers with any issues they may have.

3. Social media associate

You can become a social media associate if you have a knack for social media. Social media associates create and post content on Lyft's social media accounts. They also engage with users and answer their questions.

Social media associates at Lyft earn an average of $18 per hour. However, they can earn up to $27 per hour.

4. Copywriter

Copywriters are responsible for writing marketing material, including digital and traditional advertisements, sales pages, and social media posts.

To become a copywriter, you need to have excellent written communication and typing skills. Those who have a marketing or communication qualification will stand a better chance of getting the job, but this isn't a requirement.

Salaries for copywriters at Lyft differ based on years of experience. Junior copywriters can earn around $27 per hour, while senior copywriters can earn $44 per hour.

5. Recruiting manager

Recruiting managers are responsible for sourcing, attracting, and hiring ideal candidates for different positions. They find candidates that fit the job description and the company’s core values by posting job advertisements on job boards and other channels.

While a bachelor’s degree is preferred to get a job as a recruiting manager, it isn’t always necessary. If you have experience working within this industry, you also stand a good chance of getting the job. The average recruiting manager at Lyft earns $16 per hour.

6. Repair technician

Repair technicians are responsible for maintaining and repairing mechanical and electrical equipment that’s been returned to Lyft.

Some of their daily tasks include working together with technical teams to resolve issues, documenting processes, tracking inventory and completion, and more.

This position comes with great employee benefits, including health and dental coverage, family building, and more. To acquire this position, you need a diploma in Electronics and a few years of experience working in the industry.

On average, repair technicians earn close to $19.50 per hour. They can earn even more if they have aluminum welding and manufacturing fabrication skills.

7. Operations associate

Operations associates help coordinate operations of warehouse associates, mechanics, and drivers. They report to the operations manager to ensure availability of fleet and overall operations excellence.

Some of their tasks include managing daily operations, staffing supervision, administrative duties, and more. People applying for this position need a strong entrepreneurial mindset and should be willing to work in a fast-paced environment.

Operations associates make an average of just over $16 per hour. But they can earn up to $24 an hour if they have several years of experience.

Lyft career application: How to apply for a job at Lyft

The criteria to apply for a driver are different from the criteria to apply for a corporate position at Lyft.

If you want to apply for a corporate job, such as in the accounting or marketing department, you'll need to submit your resume and a cover letter. You can do this through the company's website or Jobcase.

If you’re applying through Jobcase, simply head over to Jobcase’s Job Board and type “Lyft” into the search bar alongside your location. From there, you’ll be given a list of available job positions. If you find one that you’re interested in, you can go ahead and apply.

Note that you may need to create an account with Jobcase before applying. Luckily, it’s easy. You can create an account by simply clicking the orange “Join” button in the top right corner of the website. From there, you can fill in your details and create a password.

If you’re applying through Lyft’s careers page, you can search for jobs based on your desired category and location. The company hires employees in 45 locations.

Suppose you want an administrative job in San Francisco. You can choose this option in the search bar. You'll see the available positions in San Francisco and can apply for ones that interest you.

Applying for a job as a Lyft driver is slightly different. First, go to the Drive with Lyft page on the company's website. Then, use the following process:

Step 1: Verify your phone number

You'll see the option to verify your phone number. Click on it, and enter your phone number. You'll then receive a verification code via text. Enter this code to continue.

Step 2: Enter your personal information

After phone number verification, you'll be asked to enter your personal information. This includes your name, email address, and driver's license.

You'll also need to create a password to use to log in to your account. After doing this, click the "Create Account" button.

Step 3: Complete Lyft’s Community Safety Education program

Lyft wants to ensure that its drivers are safe and knowledgeable. That's why you're required to complete the Community Safety Education course.

This course covers Lyft's policies and procedures. It also teaches you how to be a good driver and deal with difficult situations.

Since it’s self-paced, you can take as much time as you need to finish the course. Once you're done, click the "I'm finished" button.

Step 4: Get a background check

Since Lyft focuses on its customers' safety, it conducts background checks on its drivers. This process is simple. You just need to enter your Social Security number and date of birth.

Lyft will use this information to run a background check. It's standard procedure, and you don't have to worry about it.

The background check will take a few days. After Lyft clears you, they’ll notify you that you're ready to start driving.

Requirements to become a Lyft driver

Before you begin the application process to become a Lyft driver, you must meet specific requirements. These requirements may differ depending on your state or city. Here's what you need to become a Lyft driver:

Driver's license

Depending on your region, you should meet the minimum age requirement to have a driver's license. Plus, you should have had your license for a certain period.

Background check

After you've completed the online application, the company will run a background check. During this background check, they’ll review your criminal background and driving history.

This isn't a credit check, so even if you have bad credit, you can still become a Lyft driver. However, if something more serious and applicable comes up in the background check, it could disqualify you from becoming a driver.

Insurance

Lyft will also ask for proof of insurance. All drivers must be insured to drive for Lyft. The laws in some states also require a vehicle inspection. This inspection will ensure that your car meets the required safety standards.

Vehicle requirements

You can’t use just any car to drive for Lyft. You must have a car with four doors. The other requirements for vehicles differ depending on the area.

However, if you don't own a car, you can rent one from Express Drive. Express Drive is a rental program by Lyft, so you don't have to worry about not meeting the vehicle requirements.

Once you've met these prerequisites, you can start the application process to become a Lyft driver. The entire process is completed online, and you should be notified within a few days.

How much can you earn as a Lyft driver?

Your earnings will depend on how many rides you give, the time of day, and the city you're driving in. It's important to know how Lyft calculates your pay so that you can maximize your earnings.

  • Base fare: This is the amount you earn for each ride. The base fare differs depending on the city you're driving in.

  • Time and distance: You also earn a certain amount for the time and distance of each ride.

  • Prime time: If you give a ride during prime hours when the demand for rides is high, you'll earn an extra percentage on top of the base fare, time, and distance.

Lyft will calculate your pay and deposit it into your account weekly. You can always see how much you've earned for each ride in the app.

In addition to your regular earnings, you can earn bonuses and incentives. For example, you may receive a bonus for giving a certain number of rides in a week.

You can also earn tips from passengers. While the company suggests a default tip, passengers are free to give you more or less. All tips go directly to the driver.

What employee benefits does Lyft provide?

Lyft offers a host of employee benefits, including medical benefits, insurance, paid time off, and retirement.

Note that not all employees get the same benefits. For instance, senior-level executives often get better retirement perks than those in entry-level jobs.

Health and wellness

Health benefits at Lyft range from medical, dental, and vision insurance to free mental health services. The company also offers a fitness reimbursement program.

Lyft has partnered with Modern Health to provide free licensed therapist access to all of its employees in the U.S. Employees' families can also use this benefit.

Time off

Lyft offers paid vacation days, sick days, and mental health days. With paid time off, employees can recharge and return to work feeling refreshed.

Lyft offers unlimited paid vacations to its salaried employees. Full-time hourly employees also get paid vacation, but it's capped.

Commute benefits

Many employees struggle to afford their commutes. Lyft helps to ease this burden by offering a commuter benefit in the form of a Lyft Pink membership.

The Lyft Pink program covers transportation costs for employees, including those associated with public transit, bike-sharing, and scooter-sharing.

Parental leave

In recognition of the importance of family, Lyft offers a parental leave program.

This program provides up to 18 weeks of paid time off for primary caregivers. Parents can take this leave in one-week increments or all at once. This benefit is available for foster, adoptive, and biological parents.

Financial planning

Lyft's 401k plan helps employees save for retirement. Financial planning tools and resources are also available to all employees.

Employees can use these resources to make informed decisions about their finances. They can also get help with student loan repayment, home buying, and more.

Learning opportunities

Lyft offers a variety of learning opportunities for its employees. These include online courses, in-person workshops, and events.

The company also has a mentorship program in which employees can get guidance and advice from experienced professionals. Lyft employees also receive a Udemy subscription, which they can use to develop new skills or pursue hobbies.

Diversity and inclusion

Lyft's Employee Resource Groups are meant to foster diversity and create an inclusive environment. They provide support and networking opportunities for employees.

These groups also advocate for policies and programs that promote diversity and inclusion, as well as host events and workshops. Furthermore, many Employee Resource Groups allow employees to connect over meetings and coffee walks.

Many Lyft offices welcome dogs, too. So, if you have a furry friend, you can bring them to the office with you.

It’s important to note that drivers don't get all of these benefits. For example, they don't get health insurance or paid vacation days. These benefits are limited to people who work at Lyft's offices, such as copywriters and customer service specialists.

Learn more about benefits at Lyft in our detailed Lyft employee benefits guide.

What’s included in Lyft’s background check?

All drivers must undergo a screening process, which includes a DMV check and a criminal background check. Lyft also reviews each driver's personal driving history.

Lyft may approve or deny a driver's application based on this information. Lyft's background check policy is designed to promote safety and protect both drivers and passengers.

Additionally, drivers’ criminal histories are checked to ensure that drivers don’t have any serious offenses on their record that could harm passengers.
