Kroger may be on your list to apply for if you're looking for a new job. They offer a range of benefits for both part-time and full-time employees, with opportunities for career progression.

But maybe you’re not familiar with Kroger or not sure why you would want to work there.

In this article, we’ll answer those questions, give you insights into employee benefits, and share examples of the types of jobs that are available.

What is Kroger?

Kroger is classified as both a supermarket and a department store. Bernard Kroger opened the doors of this US grocery retailer for the first time in 1883 in Ohio.

William Rodney McMullen is the current CEO, and it’s now a leading Fortune 500 company.

Kroger isn’t the only store in the mix. The Kroger family of companies includes Ralphs, Smith’s, Dillons, King Soopers, City Market, Jay C, Pay Less, and Pick ‘n’ Save.

Why is it good to work for Kroger?

Kroger is a large employer, and there’s room to grow within the company. They offer a range of benefits, such as a Kroger health plan, training, and staff discounts.

The culture within the company is inclusive, and they are an employer who doesn’t discriminate. Current employees say it’s a supportive workplace, and the company prides itself on its family team environment.

The inclusive environment at Kroger makes it a great place to work for everyone. The company is an equal opportunity employer. It celebrates employees' unique backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

Plus, Kroger has an employee education program called Feed Your Future. The initiative is a scholarship program offering both full-time and part-time associates an education benefit. The program has a cap of $3,500 per year. Or, employees can benefit from $21,000 in total.

What benefits do full-time Kroger employees get?

If you’re considering applying for a job at Kroger, you may be wondering what benefits you can expect.

Full-time Kroger employees get a range of benefits. Full-time staff work between 30–40 hours per week.

The benefits for full-time employees include:

Health insurance

Full-time Kroger employees are eligible for affordable health insurance and life insurance. There are three health care coverage plans to choose from, and you’ll get general medical, dental, and vision coverage. You’ll also get prescription medications at a reduced cost.

To take advantage of these healthcare benefits, you’ll need to have been working for a minimum period. The timeframe will depend on the location of the grocer and your hours. Current employees suggest the waiting period ranges from six months to one year.

Kroger employees are entitled to paid time off (PTO). The length of vacation leave depends on how long you’ve been working there, how many hours you work per week, and your experience.

Full-time employees commonly receive up to seven days of vacation leave after one year of work. After three years, you can expect two weeks. Vacation leave continues to rise, with long-term employees receiving up to 30 days.

Staff also receive two paid personal days, with an extra day added per year. There’s a maximum of five personal days per year.

Kroger Co offers full-time workers limited sick leave.

Retirement plan

Kroger has a generous 401K plan. You can allocate how much of your wage you want to contribute to your pension plan. You can add up to 75% of your salary.

The company matches 100% of your contribution for the first 3%. Then, it matches 50% for the next 2%. To be eligible, you need to have worked at Kroger for at least 90 days and be at least 21 years old.

Associate discounts

Employees at Kroger get discounts on groceries and other merchandise. The percentage they receive depends on their position. For example, assistant managers may get a 10% discount, while store managers may get a 20% discount.

Kroger also offers a discount program for its employees called "Associate Discounts." This program provides discounts on things like travel, entertainment, and even some restaurants.

In addition, associates get deals throughout the year that help them save money on their everyday expenses. For example, Kroger may offer discounts on holiday purchases during the holidays.

Emotional wellness

Employees also have access to free counseling services. In addition, the program provides confidential counseling services to help employees deal with personal and work-related issues.

Emotional wellness resources are helpful in a fast-paced environment since they provide a space to deal with work-related stress. In addition, counseling services can help employees find healthy ways to cope with their stressors and improve their quality of life.

Ongoing education

Employees get up to $21,000 in tuition reimbursement. They can use this money to further their education.

This benefit not only covers GEDs and bachelor's degrees, though. Associates can also use this money to fund their Ph.D. degrees or other post-graduate studies.

Kroger also offers a variety of educational opportunities. For example, the company has an on-site library and an online learning portal. Employees can use these resources to improve their job skills.

A major perk of Kroger employee benefits is that they are also available for part-time associates. Therefore, part-time workers can also use this money to supplement their education.

Growth opportunities

Kroger has a wide range of growth opportunities for its associates. Some of these include:

  • Learning programs: These are designed to help you grow your skills and knowledge so that you can contribute more effectively to the company. For instance, the company offers a training program called the Leadership Development Program.

  • On-the-job training: Like many companies, Kroger offers on-the-job training. This training teaches associates how to perform their duties more effectively.

  • Personalized development: These programs are designed specifically for employees based on their career goals and interests

Flexible schedule

Since Kroger is a 24/7 business, it offers its employees a flexible schedule. Associates can choose the days and hours they want to work.

A flexible work schedule helps you manage your time more effectively. It can also make it easier to balance work and life responsibilities. It is especially helpful for students or people who have other jobs. Employees can leverage flexible schedules to:

  • Fulfill their elder care or childcare duties

  • Pursue their education

  • Work part-time

Life/disability insurance

Disability insurance covers a predetermined percentage of an employee's salary if they cannot work because of an injury or illness. Kroger also offers life insurance to its employees.

Factors that influence disability insurance premiums include age, line of work, occupation, and income. So, if you're at a higher post at Kroger, your premiums will likely be lower than if you were at a lower post. The same is true for different lines of work.

The company provides a basic life insurance policy for all associates. Full-time employees can also enroll in Kroger's voluntary life insurance program. This program offers additional coverage to employees and their families.

What benefits do part-time Kroger employees get?

Part-time Kroger employees get many of the same benefits as full-time workers. Part-time is around 30 hours of work per week or less.

There are training opportunities for part-time workers with the potential for career progression.

If you’re thinking about applying for a job at Kroger, these are some of the part-time benefits you can expect:

Health insurance

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has made it mandatory for employers to offer health care coverage for part-time workers.

Part-time employees are eligible for health insurance if they work for more than 30 hours per week.

Paid time off and vacation leave are given to some part-time employees. Your eligibility will depend on hours worked, the store, and your experience.

You can't use vacation leave until you've worked at Kroger for at least one year.

Retirement plan

Depending on how many hours you work, you may be able to access the Kroger 401K plan. In addition, you can set aside up to 75% of your salary as you save for your future.

Kroger grocery stores will match 100% of personal contributions up to 3% and 50% for the next 2%.

Part-time employees must have worked 1,000 hours during 12 months to get a retirement plan. They must also be 21 years old.

Employee discounts

Part-time Kroger employees are entitled to the same 10% off as full-time employees. This discount is available on home-branded products.
