Stimulus bill passes House vote. What it means to you.
Jump to section

Over 6 months since negotiations began, the second version of a stimulus bill, known as the new HEROES Act has passed a vote in the House of Representatives. But, even so, negotiations aren’t over yet. So what does the passing of this bill mean to you and your likelihood of receiving a stimulus check before the election? Here is a breakdown of the process and what you can expect at this stage.

How a stimulus bill becomes law

In order for any bill to be fully ratified, or passed into law, it must:

  1. **be proposed **to the House of Representatives,
  2. pass a vote of the House of Representatives,
  3. pass a vote in the Senate.

Once the bill passes votes by both the House and Senate, only then can it be signed into law by the President.

The good news is that the new HEROES Act has passed a vote in the House of Representatives (step 2 complete) bringing it closer to being ratified, but still not (yet) law. If you’re hopeful that this bill will pass, you’ll want to watch the upcoming Senate proceedings very closely.

How likely is the new HEROES bill to pass a vote in the Senate?

Opinions are split on the likelihood that this bill will pass. On one side, some believe that the bill will be too costly to pass in a Senate controlled by the Republican party, which is known historically to oppose government spending. Others believe that the bill may be more likely to pass since it is the last bill expected to be proposed before the presidential election later this fall. Some also believe that the recent news that the President has contracted #Coronavirus may sway the Senate to pass the bill quickly. Either way, predictions at this stage vary wildly and the bill passing is not a “sure bet” by any standard.

What is the Senate doing?

What you can expect if the bill passes

If this bill passes, you can expect a stimulus payment of $1,200 or more to be sent to you via direct deposit, prepaid card or paper check. Those who previously qualified for PUA could also expect the $600 weekly boost to unemployment payments to return. To hear more about what changes may come with this bill read our article on all of the benefits in HEROES Act that may impact you.

How soon could I get my check?

If you’re crossing your fingers for a stimulus check, it could come fairly soon, depending on how you qualify and, of course, how long negotiations take. There are several possible timelines for when a stimulus check could come based on when the bill may be passed. Timing could also vary based on which method the IRS uses to disburse your payment, with direct deposits being the fastest option, paper checks expected roughly a week later, and EIP prepaid cards being the slowest option arriving on average 2-3 weeks after direct deposits.

Here’s the full breakdown of possible payment times based on how negotiations fare and how you’ll receive your payment.

| Action | Date of action | Date of action | Date of action | Date of action | |---------------------|--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|--------------------| | Senate passes | Oct. 6th | Oct. 13th | Dec. 2nd | Dec. 8th | | President signs | Oct. 7th | Oct. 14th | Dec. 3rd | Dec. 9th | | Direct Deposit sent | Week of Oct. 12th | Week of Oct. 19th | Week of Dec. 7th | Week of Dec. 7th | | Paper checks sent | Week of Oct. 19th | Week of Oct. 26th | Week of Dec. 14th | Week of Dec. 7th | | EIP cards sent | Week of Nov. 9th | Week of Nov. 16th | Week of Jan. 11th | Week of Jan. 18th |

What you can do to influence the Senate’s vote

No matter how you feel about this bill passing, you should be aware that your state’s senators will be voting on this bill very soon. Your state’s senators could have their own feelings on the matter, but at the end of the day they are meant to represent their constituents - that's you!

If you have strong feelings about whether it should pass or not, consider contacting your state senator’s office to let them know how you feel. You may not be in the room when this vote takes place, but your thoughts are valuable and should be considered by the government officials who represent you in Congress.

So what about you? Would you pass this bill?

The next bill passed should be term limits, pay cuts. We are taxed to death. We can't have any quality of life. I can't have any medical . Get this I lost my insurance. Because I have applied for disability I can't have state insurance of any kind. I am low income. I can't get help. I lost most of my meds. And treatments. Until they decided if I get my disability which could be another three years. What kind of person made this decision. I hope he gets the same treatment.
