Jump to section

Customers use Grubhub to order meal deliveries from nearby restaurants. Every day, the app processes orders for around 745,000 hungry customers. Grubhub has more than 300,000 restaurant partners in the U.S., and its delivery drivers have shared more than 4 billion dollars worth of tips. Grubhub is always looking for more drivers. If you want a job with a flexible work schedule, a Grubhub delivery driver position could be right for you. The application process is straightforward, and if there is no work available in your area, you'll be put on a waiting list. To be successful, you'll need to pass a background check. Grubhub will look at your criminal record and driving record to make sure you're a good fit. How does the background check process work? And, what are they looking for? Let's take a look.

What is Grubhub?

Grubhub Inc. is owned by Just Eat Takeaway. It's been operating since 2004, with headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. It's a platform that lets customers order meals via the web or mobile, with delivery to their doors. And because of social distancing, the company also offers a contact-free delivery option. Grubhub is connected to restaurants throughout the U.S. The stores are a mix of big franchises and smaller restaurants that don't have the budget for their own drivers. The company relies on a network of independent contractors who deliver food by car or bicycle. Grubhub is similar to other delivery platforms like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Postmates. Customers can track their orders in real-time and interact with drivers. If you work for Grubhub, you can choose your own schedule. And, you’ll get a range of benefits and discounts from some of its partners.

What do you need to work at Grubhub?

If you want to work as a Grubhub delivery driver, you'll need a reliable car or bicycle. And, you'll need to be at least 19 years old or 21 if you live in Las Vegas. Drivers should have a valid driver's license and accident insurance. If you want to take advantage of the bike delivery option, you'll need to live in a more populated area and have a valid state ID. Grubhub delivery partners need an iPhone or Android smartphone with reliable mobile data. To accept delivery orders, you’ll have to download the Grubhub app. You'll be paid by direct deposit, so you'll need a bank account. And, as an independent contractor, you'll be responsible for your own taxes. To work in the food delivery services industry, you should have excellent communication skills, listening skills, and good time management. Plus, you should be a safe driver, motivated, and happy to work independently.

What is the Grubhub background check?

During the Grubhub application process, you'll need to have a background check. Most companies do this type of check, including Uber, Instacart, and Doordash. In this role, you'll be working with the public and representing the Grubhub brand. The safety of customers, restaurant owners, and team members is a high priority. So, Grubhub is looking for a history of serious crimes that could have an impact on safety. Grubhub uses a third-party company to check your criminal records and driving history. But, before this can happen, you'll need to give them your permission. The company will usually ask for your Social Security number, birth date, address, and email address. If you say no, you won't be able to work for the food delivery service app. In most states, the background check goes back seven years. But, it can go back ten years or more from time to time. The records will come from local, state, interstate, and national databases. After the initial background screening, Grubhub will do regular checks to make sure your record hasn’t changed.

What is Grubhub looking for on background checks?

Grubhub uses the background screening process to look for any red flags. The hiring manager will check your arrest records for serious criminal convictions such as physical assault, theft, and sexual assault. Plus, they'll be keeping an eye out for major violations on your driving record, such as driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, at-fault accidents, or driving with a suspended license. If you have multiple minor infractions, such as speeding tickets and parking fines, your application could also be affected. If you have a clean record, your application will go to the next stage, and you'll be one step closer to becoming one of Grubhub's delivery partners. There's still a chance you could get hired even if something shows up on your record. It depends on the type of crime, the time since it occurred, and whether Grubhub thinks you'd pose a risk to customers. Sometimes, the company will contact you to get more information about your history. This will give you the opportunity to explain your circumstances.

Who does Grubhub use for its background checks?

Most of the time, Grubhub uses a background check company called Checkr. You won't be charged to use this service. For your convenience, there's an applicant portal so you can keep track of any progress. You'll need to enter some personal details, including your Social Security number (SSN), email, and birth date, to log in. If you make a mistake when submitting your personal details, your status will be suspended. Checkr will get in touch with you via email to verify your information before the process can continue. Once your report has been finalized, Checkr will send it to Grubhub. It'll then be up to the hiring manager to decide whether they'd like to hire you. If something on your report shouldn't be there, you can file a dispute with Checkr. But, if you have a specific question about the job, you should speak to Grubhub's customer service team. For those who aren't sure what's on their criminal record, you can run a personal background check before applying. This is free as part of Checkr's Better Future program. Mistakes can happen, and there could be something on your record that shouldn't be there. When you do your own background check, you can find and resolve any errors.

How long does the Grubhub application process take?

The background check report usually takes between three and seven business days. Depending on where you live, there can be delays. For example, some courts could be facing backlogs, and Checkr might have to wait for paper documents rather than electronic ones. Or, the company could need additional details from you. Remember, you can check your application status by logging in to the portal. If you meet the background check criteria and Grubhub has verified you as a delivery partner, you'll be sent a package with your delivery equipment. You'll get a Grubhub driver card to pay for your customer's orders. And, you'll get branded delivery bags. It can take up to ten business days for this package to arrive, but you can start work once you’ve received confirmation. There's no specific Grubhub uniform, but you'll be dealing with customers, so choose a neat and comfortable outfit.

Does Grubhub do a drug test?

While Grubhub does a criminal background check and looks at your driving history, there's no drug screening test. And, it's not something you should expect in the future.

How much can you make at Grubhub?

When you start working at Grubhub, you'll get allocated delivery boundaries. You can accept any deliveries in this area and choose when you work. If you need extra cash, you can take on more shifts. The rate you'll be paid does vary. Each delivery is based on mileage, time, and any special bonuses. For example, the company often runs promotions with bonuses for every trip you complete. And, sometimes during peak periods, you’ll get incentives to deliver your meals on time. If customers are satisfied with your service, they can give you a tip. Any tips you make are yours to keep. You can use the Instant Cash Out feature to be paid straight away by direct deposit. There's a maximum withdrawal limit of $500 per day, and there can be a small fee. Alternatively, you can wait to be paid every Tuesday.
